The Curve House

Year: 2024
Location: Hillhurst, Calgary

The Curve House is a main floor renovation that reimagines an early-2000s home with a light touch and a clear point of view. The goal was to bring the space into the present, elevating its natural flow, brightening the palette, and leaning into its unique architectural details rather than covering them up. The original layout featured several unexpected elements for a home of its age and type: tall ceilings, arched openings, and a curved staircase that set the tone for the rest of the project. Instead of treating these as dated remnants, we saw them as opportunities to draw out the softness of the curves and create a sense of rhythm and cohesion throughout.

The Details

We began by wrapping the central staircase in sculptural plaster to create a soft architectural anchor at the heart of the home. A custom Berber runner was added for warmth and texture. The original hardwood floors were refinished in a lighter tone to brighten the foundation of the space, the existing maple cabinetry was carefully sprayed and refreshed, and the fireplace was reimagined with handcrafted artisan tile. Throughout the home, we introduced sculptural lighting and understated hardware - forms that balance function with a sense of playful elegance. Every design decision, whether visual or structural, was considered and cost-conscious, proving that a full transformation doesn’t always require a full gut.

Contrast and Continuity

The Curve House is a project that celebrates contrast and continuity: old and new, soft and structured, thoughtful and efficient. It’s a reflection of how subtle shifts in tone, light, and flow can breathe entirely new life into a familiar space.
